Bollywood star, Aishwarya Rai’s film, Provoked opens last Friday in UK.

The movie was based on a real life story of a Punjabi woman who leaves India to marry an London based guy who ended up raping and abusing her. Kiranjit Ahluwalia set fire on her husband after a decade of violence and sexual abuse by him. She was then sentenced to jail.

While she was behind bars serving her sentence, a group of social workers called the Southhall Black Sisters organized rallies and protests following which the British judicial system reprieved Kiranjit’s punishment. Her plight went on to help change the way victims of domestic violence are treated by the law.

The film also features The Lost star Naveen Andrews and a number of other British actors including Robbie Coltrane and Eastenders star Steve McFadden – who plays one of the policemen involved in arresting Kiranjit.
