The 31-year-old English midfielder, weary of the politics and the lack of playing time in Spain with Real Madrid, today agreed to a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer and will join the team when his contract with Real expires on June 30. According to reports in the British news media, the deal includes salary and commercial opportunities worth $250 million.

 The player and wife Victoria have meanwhile spent an increasing amount of time in LA, latterly house-hunting – prompting rumors of a move. After agreeing a deal to spend the twilight years of his career in the sunshine of California, Beckham today said, “This week Real asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract for a further two seasons. After considering several options to stay in Madrid or join other major British and European teams, I have decided to join LA Galaxy.”

Again, the news maker has been at it. This time, celebrity heiress Paris Hilton was sentenced to three years’ probation after recoding a no contest plead to the charge of reckless driving due to alcoholic influence from last September’s arrest in Hollywood.

Paris Hilton, party slut and tacky millionairess, was fined US$390 and ordered to attend an alcohol-education programme. In California, a no-contest plea is the legal equivalent to pleading guilty.
