Alex, a frequent guest on TV shows, took part in scientific research and was often the subject of newspaper articles, has died from natural causes at the age of 31 last week. Alex is a famous parrot, she can differentiate colours and shapes and learnt over 100 English words.

This African gray parrot could be the most famous talking bird in the world. Dr. Pepperberg bought her from a pet shop in 1977 when she was still a Harvard chemistry student.

Alex spent most of her life learning new skills including English words in Harvard and Brandeis universities. Scientists at the time had little hope that a bird could learn human language.
