Asians generally lose their virginity at a later age compared to their western counterparts. In a study called ‘The Global Face of Sex’ carried out by Durex Network, the average age for sex is 19.25. Austrians were surprisingly the earliest to lose their virginity at the age of 17.3 years old. This is followed by Brazilians (17.4), Germans (17.6), New Zealanders (17.8), Australians (17.9), and Americans (18.0). The Japanese lose theirs at 19.4, followed by Nigerians (19.7), Hongkongers (20.2), Thais (20.5), Chinese (22.1), Singaporeans (22.8), Indians (22.9), and Malaysians (23.0). Those who had sex early confessed that they were not really ready for the experience. Those who had it later claimed that they were comfortable with sex or were ready for it the first time they engaged in sexual activity.

In general, people are less likely to be pressured into having sex early if they live in urban places, are more highly educated or earn a higher income. Yet the trend of earlier sexual activity amongst people in developed countries is most likely due to cultural influences, exposure in the media, and less binding community ties. The study also found that three in ten people did not use protection or contraceptives the first time they had sex. Contraceptive use increased amongst people who talked openly about sex or sexual health.
