Miss Japan Riyo Mori who is a 20-year-old dancer was crowned Miss Universe 2007 in Mexico City, marking only the second time Japan has won the world beauty title. The last time Japan won the pageant was in 1959 when Akiko Kojima became the first Miss Universe from Asia.

Riyo Mori has received the crown adorned with 800 diamonds and 120 pearls  which valued at $250,000  from Miss Universe 2006, Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico. The top five beauties of Miss Universe 2007 were first runner-up Natalia Guimaraes of Brazil, second runner-up Ly Jonaitis of Venezuela, third runner-up Lee Honey of Korea and fourth runner-up Rachel Smith of the U.S.

“I’m really happy, I cannot believe it yet,” said Mori, whose ambition is to open an international dance school. “Right now I am only 20 years old, so I’m really excited about what I’m going to be able to do at this age to benefit society.” The Japanese young girl who won the Miss Universe 2007 will spend her year-long reign traveling the world to speak out on humanitarian issues like poverty and disease.
