A 57-year-old amateur artist from Illinois requested the court to change his name legally from “Steve Kreuscher” to “In God We Trust.”

Steve Kreuscher wants the judge to permit his new first name to be “In God” and his last name to be “We Trust.”

He said that he wants to be known as “In God We Trust” because this name would symbolize the help God gave him through tough times.

He told the Daily Herald, he’s worried that atheists may succeed in removing the phrase “In God We Trust” from U.S. currency. He recalls that the phrase “God Reigns” was removed from the Zion city seal in 1992 after Illinois courts deemed it unconstitutional.

Steve Kreuscher said, “those words are an endangered species. You might take it off the money, but you can’t take away my name.”

A hearing on this case is scheduled in a Lake County court on June 13, 2008.
