Leon Lai and Zhang Zi-Yi will work together in a new film by Chen Kaige on Mei Lanfang’s biopic. It is about the late Peking Opera Master Mei Lanfang (will be acted by Leon Lai), and Zhang Zi-Yi will be the co-star, acting as Meng Xiaodong, who is Mei Lanfang’s co singer.
Both Leon and Zhang are busy taking lessons to polish up their opera skills. Zhang found walking in platform shoes was her greatest challenge.
This new film will mark Chen’s return to the genre of Peking Opera. His previous movie, “Farewell My Concubine” about the homesexual relationship between 2 Peking Opera stars won the Golden Palm award at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival Award and 2 Oscar noimatins in 1994.
Other cast members in this film include Chen Hong, Gillian Chung and Japanese actor Masanobu Ando. The film is expected to be released next year.
