In squeaky clean and tightly-disciplined Singapore – the country where chewing gums are banned – lies a sordid and revolting crime. A Muslim man who has ten wives – four legal and six contractual –is found guilty of having sex with five of his under-aged daughters. Looks like sex with the ten wives was not enough. His sexual libido was too great and his desire too strong to refrain from using his own girls to fulfil his sexual needs. Three of the wives abetted the incest by coaxing their own under aged daughters to have sex with their father. As a result, two of the daughters have had to undergo abortions. The eldest daughter, who is 17 now, went to the police to report the rapes.

The man has 64 children besides his ten wives and lives like a king in his harem. He claims that he owns his children and thus has the rights to have sex with them whenever he wants. He only has to express his wish and his wives would tell the daughters to wait in their father’s room.

It is shocking and unbelievable that such a crime is possible in this small and developed country. Laws are civilised and strictly enforced. Moreover, women are highly educated and the standard of living is high. That sexual impulses and baser instincts still rule in such an environment is shocking but irrefutable. And in a heartless and highly competitive society, such crime can happen in one’s backyard without anyone the wiser. The question arises: have women really achieved independence and liberation? Have men really controlled or mastered their bodies and emotions? Are we the master of our fate or the slave of our desire?
