Night at the Museum

The movie tell a story on an out-of-the-world adventure that takes place inside the famous New York’s Natural History Museum, it is a journey of self-redemption for the building’s new night guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), a divorcee who’s in desperate need of a job so that he can mend his relationship with his estranged son.

Daley is a good-hearted guy but he tends to dream a lot, he always thinks he’s destined for something big. But even he could never have imaged how “big,” when he accepts what appears to be a menial job as a graveyard-shift security guard at a museum of natural history. While finding his own courage, Daley mends his relationship with his son, who is slowly pulling himself away due to dad’s unfulfilled promises.

During Larry’s watch in the museum, extraordinary things begin to occur: Mayans, Roman Gladiators, and cowboys emerge from their diorama to wage epic battles; in his quest for fire, a Neanderthal burns down his own display; Attila the Hun (Patrick Gallagher) pillages his neighboring exhibits, and a T-Rex reminds everyone why he’s history’s fiercest predator. Amidst the chaos, the only person Larry can turn to for advice is a wax figure of President Theodore Roosevelt (Robin Williams), who helps our hero harness the bedlam, stop a nefarious plot, and save the museum.
The movie is not about the great visual effects only. It has an equally big soul to match. It is really a combination of good messages and CGI (Computer Generated Images) elements that contribute to a great holiday movie for kids and adults alike this festive season.

In a way, Night at the Museum reminds me of the board game adventure/fantasy Jumanji, except that there are more suspense elements in the latter. I enjoy the intriguing schoolboy fantasy that the movie presents. Besides, it is also a big fun to watch Ben Stiller’s comedy talents in the movie. His performance keeps everybody entertained till the end. His heated exchange with the monkey – during daytime when the latter is just a stuffed animal, left everybody stitches while at the same time drawing much sympathy when he is struck by a series of misfortunes. Only Stiller can find the right balance.

Anyway, somehow or rather, this movie seems to lose its grip during the adventure. The reason might be that there is no real element of danger there. You see all the museum creatures, except them monkeys, are too well-behaved like good pre-school children. So you know that everything will be all right.

This movie also promotes the joy of knowing history. Daley survives the subsequent nights when he know more about the exhibits from the 26th US President Theodore Roosevelt, whom he thought was the country’s fourth!

The movie was directed by Shawn Levy and the cast overview is as follow:
